Many landlords will feel the need to cut corners in order to get the best policy of landlord insurance or a nicer yield from their tenants, yet one recently took this into a new realm of unscrupulousness and was immediately set upon by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which handed him a huge fine.
Oxford landlord – a Glasgow GP by the name of Dr Tariq Mahmood – was ordered to pay nearly £5,000 in costs after a faulty gas boiler put the lives of his student tenants in danger. After failing to maintain the boiler at his property at Laurel Court in East Oxford, a gas installer later found that the boiler was out of order and may be exposing tenants to the deadly risks of carbon monoxide poisoning.
