Research revises criteria for some Alzheimer’s patients

February 6th, 2012 by Kevin Davis

Revised criteria included in a report recently published online first by the Archives of Neurology shows that many patients who are currently diagnosed with mild Alzheimers disease dementia could possibly be reclassified as having mild cognitive impairment instead.

The results of the study suggest that 99.8 percent of patients who have been diagnosed with very mild AD dementia and 92.7 percent of those diagnosed with mild AD dementia could be reclassified and downgraded to MCI.

“The elimination of the functional boundary between MCI and AD dementia means that their distinction will be based solely on the individual judgment of clinicians, resulting in nonstandard and ultimately arbitrary diagnostic approaches to MCI,” said Dr.

Surveyors say house sales activity firm

January 31st, 2012 by Kevin Davis

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has published its 2011 UK Housing Survey. The main findings are that activity remained relatively firm during December and an increasing amount of new stock came on to the market.

The average number of completed sales per surveyor in the three months to December was 15.2. This is slightly down on the figure for November but is still close to its highest level since the autumn of 2010. Surveyors say that some sellers are asking unrealistic prices, which may be hindering sales.

Agents predictions for the lettings market

December 9th, 2011 by Kevin Davis

Landlord insurance clients making plans for next year should take a look at recent news from Townends, the London and South of England Agents who have given their predictions for 2012.

Group Lettings Director Caroline Kavanagh says: “Much the same as last year, high demand and low supply has been the theme of 2011 causing rents to rise by an average of 20% across London and the South East. The fact is that it is not possible for rents to continue rising at the rate they have been next year, as this is not sustainable. Despite this I believe demand will remain strong and peripheral areas of prime locations will start to benefit from the overspill of tenants. H

Bank Risk, The New Threat: How credit insurance mitigates this type of exposure

December 1st, 2011 by Kevin Davis

Sovereign entities and various state governments have trillions of Euros in debt, and they continue to run deficits, which will have to be financed. Household debt also continues to rise. Who holds most of this debt? Banks!

The various agencies responsible for monitoring the finances of banks are increasingly concerned and are subjecting more banks to “Stress Tests” to determine if their Balance Sheets would withstand a major drop in the stock markets and increased unemployment. Whi

HMRC Create New Task Force

November 14th, 2011 by Kevin Davis

While the vast majority of buy to let landlords in the UK are honest and law abiding, there are nevertheless a small number who insist on cutting costs to the degree that they are breaking the law. Tax evasion among some buy to let landlords has recently become of particular interest to HMRC, which has put together a task force to deal with the issue.

While HMRC warned on November 7th that the crackdown has begun on tax evading buy to let landlords, it pointed out that most did not choose to evade their tax obligations.

Two areas that will be placed under the microscope by the special HMRC taskforce are North Wales and north-west England.

Holiday Homes in Cornwall

October 28th, 2011 by Kevin Davis

Cornwall has long been a popular location for buying a holiday home, both for those with families who want to escape busier, more populated parts of the UK, and retired people who just want somewhere relaxing to spend weekends and holidays. But what is it that makes life in Cornwall so attractive?

Staying in Cornwall, even if it’s just for a few weeks a year, can be something of a surprise, simply because the way of life experienced in this county is very different from some other areas of the UK. Some have described social events – especially those in smaller communities – as being similar to those found in small Irish communities. After

London rents hit all time high

September 21st, 2011 by Kevin Davis

Landlords insurance clients with properties in London will be cheered by news from the tenant referencing specialists Homelet. They say that London rents hit an all-time high in August 2011 with the average monthly rent in Greater London reaching £1,202. This is up slightly on the month before and 12.2% higher than the figure a year ago.
It seems clear that salaries are not rising as fast as rents so tenants must be feeling worse off. Many of them are tenants rather than buyers because they cannot raise the mortgage deposit.
