The named “indexed” or “indexed-rate” refers to the way that these annuities earn interest: the interest rate on each indexed-rate annuity follows a particular market index. When that market index performs well, your interest rate mirrors it, as specified in your annuity contract; when the index drops, so does your interest rate.

Your interest rate is important because your annuity accumulates value through only two things: your premium payments and the interest aforementioned. When you instruct your agent to trigger your annuity pension, the size of your pension payments depends in large part on how much equity your annuity has built up.

Indexed annuities aren’t as volatile as actual market indices. Although your interest rate on an indexed annuity may rise and fall, there is actually a guaranteed interest rate, which serves as a minimum value. You may receive interest in excess of this minimal guarantee, but even if the market index drops into the negative, you’ll still receive the guaranteed interest rate.
